Jankovic, Ivanovic, Mauresmo all bow out in Zurich

Zurich, Switzerland (Sports Network) - Third-seeded Serbian Jelena Jankovic, French Open runner-up Ana Ivanovic of Serbia and former world No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo of France were a trio of second-round upset victims Wednesday at the $1.34 million Zurich Open.
Jankovic was straight-setted by Czech slugger Nicole Vaidisova 6-4, 6-4. A struggling Jankovic has now dropped her last two tournament-opening matches and has lost four of her last six outings overall.
Vaidisova will meet Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko in Friday's quarterfinals here.
The fifth-seeded Ivanovic was sent packing by surging Frenchwoman Tatiana Golovin 6-3, 6-1, while an eighth-seeded Mauresmo was knocked out by Bondarenko 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 at Hallenstadion. Golovin has won 13 of her last 15 matches, including a title in Slovenia last month and a runner-up finish against the great Justine Henin in Stuttgart just two weeks ago.
One other second-round result saw ninth-seeded Wimbledon runner-up Marion Bartoli of France dismiss Dutch wild card Michaella Krajicek 6-4, 6-1. Bartoli will meet the surging Golovin on Friday.
In opening-round action, Italian Francesca Schiavone got past injured Russian Elena Dementieva 4-6, 6-1, 4-2, as the two-time major finalist Dementieva retired in the third set due to a left thigh injury. Dementieva was fresh off her big title in Moscow, where she upset former top-ranked star Serena Williams in the finale.
With her second-round exit here, Dementieva will fail to qualify for this year's season-ending Tour Championships in Madrid.
"Obviously I'm very disappointed about the result of the match and disappointed also that I couldn't have made it to Madrid," Dementieva said.
Schiavone will encounter 2002 titlist and 2005 Zurich runner-up Patty Schnyder of Switzerland here on Thursday.
Also on Thursday, a top-seeded/world No. 1 Henin will open her stay here against Russian Vera Zvonareva and second-seeded U.S. Open runner-up Svetlana Kuznetsova will take on Austrian Sybille Bammer.
The reigning U.S. and French Open champion Henin captured this Swiss event in 2003. The Belgian stalwart is riding a 16-match winning streak, with her last loss coming against Bartoli in the Wimbledon semifinals.
The 2007 Zurich titlist will take home $182,000.

Jankovic, Davenport reach semis; Mauresmo falls in Beijing

Beijing, China (Sports Network) - World No. 3 Jelena Jankovic and former No. 1 Lindsay Davenport posted quarterfinal wins, while third-seeded Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo came up a loser Friday at the $600,000 China Open.
The second-seeded Jankovic handled Japan's Akiko Morigami 6-3, 7-5, while the unseeded Davenport won her eighth straight match by ousting fourth-seeded Russian Elena Dementieva 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 at Beijing Tennis Center.
Jankovic and the three-time major titlist Davenport will now meet for a second straight week, as the 31-year-old American doused the Serbian star in last week's quarterfinals on her way to a title in Bali. Last week marked Davenport's first WTA Tour singles action since last September. She gave birth to her first child, a son named Jagger, in June of this year.

Henin tops Jankovic in Toronto final

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Justine Henin captured her second career Rogers Masters title on Sunday with a hard-fought victory over Serbia's Jelena Jankovic.
The top-seeded Belgian needed 2 hours, 18 minutes to earn a 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 triumph on the hardcourts of the Rexall Centre on the campus of York University. She previously won this event in 2003 before capturing her only U.S. Open crown.
Jankovic, the second seed, rallied to beat France's Tatiana Golovin 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 in Saturday night's second semifinal, well after Henin cruised her way in Saturday afternoon with a straight-set victory against Chinese qualifier Yan Zi.
Henin, the world's top-ranked player, tuned up for the U.S. Open with her first event since losing in the semifinals at Wimbledon last month. With the win in Toronto she has also claimed her sixth title of 2007, having already won in Dubai, Doha, Warsaw, Roland Garros and Eastbourne, and the 35th of her brilliant career.
Henin has won all seven lifetime meetings with Jankovic, including five this year. She prevailed in semifinal matchups at Doha, Warsaw and the French Open, while also claiming a quarterfinal at the Berlin Open.
Henin, in addition to her victory at this event in 2003, was also the runner- up two years ago.
A final comprised of the tournament's top two seeds has happened six times over the season's first 41 Tour events.
